Vail Professorship Series
The Harold Vail Visiting Professorship was established in 1979 for the purpose of bringing outstanding scientists to Ottawa.
A prominent Ottawa businessman, Harold Vail opened his first Vail’s Dry Cleaners in 1940. Also known for his philanthropic nature, Mr. Vail donated the land for the building of the current Good Companions Senior’s Centre, located at 670 Albert Street.
In 1962 Harold’s wife, Eva was diagnosed with breast cancer and eight years later Harold was diagnosed with leukemia. After his personal experiences, Harold wanted to help ensure others had access to the best possible cancer care.
Together with his oncologist, Harold established the Vail Visiting Professorship Fund. The Fund would cover the cost of bringing world-leading oncologists and cancer specialists to Ottawa to share their knowledge in the cure and treatment of cancer.
This would educate area doctors and nurses, and ultimately benefit local cancer patients.
Harold & Eva Vail lived happy and productive lives until passing away just six months apart from each other in late 1979 and early 1980.
A highlight of the local medical community, renowned specialists from the USA, Great Britain, China, France and Canada have come to Ottawa to teach & share best practices each year since 1986.
