Research and New Therapies
Ottawa is considered a centre of excellence for early drug development which has led to treatments being available for the very first time right here. One ongoing clinical trial of great interest is the work being done by Dr. John Bell with oncolytic viruses. His research has reached Phase Two of human clinical trials and showing very promising results for patients. We will keep you posted on Dr. Bell’s amazing work in the coming months.
The Cancer Foundation has contributed to every cancer clinical trial that has opened in Ottawa over the past four years. In 2011, a record breaking 2,200 patients had access to trials both at the Ottawa Hopsital and the Irving Greenberg Family Cancer Centre at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. On May 25, 2012, the Cancer Foundation held its annual Clinical Trials Breakfast, bringing together oncologists, researchers, nurses and business and community leaders to raise funds in support of local clinical trial programs. The breakfast raised over $240,000 to fund clinical trials in our community.
