prairieFyre - Transforming Your Career

prairieFyre Software: Giving Back to the Community

Cancer: a dreaded word no one likes to hear.

I think I can safely say that we have all been touched by this horrific disease in some way—either personally, with family, or friends.  Just over a year ago Don Smith (a former CEO of Mitel and close colleague of prairieFyre Software) introduced our company to an exciting project started by the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation and led by the Survivorship Task Force. That project was the Maplesoft Centre for Cancer Survivorship Care. After talking with Don and meeting with Foundation staff, we were extremely impressed with what this centre offered to the local community. That's why we made an immediate commitment to donate $25,000 – five thousand dollars a year for the next five years.

When we first became involved with the Cancer Foundation, it was suggested that we sponsor one of the programs offered. We were immediately attracted to the "Transforming Your Career" program. Here was an area that did not get the attention it deserved – how to integrate back into the work force after cancer. Survivorship levels are on the rise, people are living longer with cancer now and getting back to work is not easy. There are many psychological, social, and of course physical hurdles on the cancer journey.  We appreciated how the "Transforming Your Career" program helped survivors identify goals and options, develop plans, and ultimately help make their way back into the work force. Everyone needs a strong social support network, and the Maplesoft Centre provides this by creating a community of survivors.

So what has prairieFyre done to help? Since launching the Cancer Survivorship donation campaign last year, we have held bi-weekly fundraising events such as staff lunches, BBQs, and 50/50 raffles. Signature events like our annual golf tournament and Christmas party raised money through putting contests, raffles, and draws. We've also hosted silent auctions, bake sales, book sales, Walk/Run-a-thons, table-top sport tournaments, and poker tournaments.  We are proud of our accomplishments and everyone at prairieFyre feels they are contributing and making a difference! In the last year, we've raised over $10,000 towards our goal and commitment to ensuring that places like the Maplesoft Centre continue to provide the best support possible to our community. Our efforts will continue.

Those who walk through the doors are empowered to take control of their health and make sound decisions about their cancer care and overall health. We urge everyone to help prairieFyre and the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation’s fight to increase cancer survivorship in Eastern Ontario.

A special thanks to Foundation staff and coaches at the Cancer Foundation - you are making a big difference in this community.
