Plannning for a world without cancer
Claire Buckley's gift from the heart

Claire Buckley, of Carleton Place, hopes future generations won't have to deal with cancer.

"I lost two grandfathers, my father-in-law, an uncle and an aunt to cancer," says Claire. Claire's mom had breast cancer at 47, her father was recently treated for prostate cancer and her husband, Joe, had melanoma. Cancer survival is an emotional topic for Claire.

With cancer so prevalent in her family, Claire is religious about annual screening. "I worry about my mammogram. I worry about my daughters, Sara and Jessica, my mom, my dad, Joe and everyone else who is close to me." A recent career change gave Claire a special opportunity to include the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation as a beneficiary in her life insurance policy.

"We have to do whatever we can to find the answer," says Claire. "I can't give a large gift today, but I can when I die. It's not morbid, it's planning and it is important to me. I like the fact that my gift will stay in Ottawa, I have a high trust level of the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation and hopefully I am instilling the seed of philanthropy in my kids."

Today, Claire's mom, dad and husband Joe are all cancer-free. They are part of a growing group of cancer survivors.
