FR Telus Day of Service
Spring cleaning was in the air Saturday May 28, 2010 at the Richard and Annette Bloch Cancer Survivors Park as a crew of volunteers from TELUS took part in their annual Day of Service. Close to 40 TELUS staffers were on hand between 9:30am and Noon to help clean-up the 4.2 acre Park for the summer season.
“TELUS is an amazing corporate partner in our community,” remarked Linda Eagen, President and CEO of the Cancer Foundation. “They are leaders in philanthropic giving in our community, and we are honoured to be working with their team members again this year for the TELUS Day of Service.”
2010 marks the 5th anniversary of the TELUS Day of Service, and the second year local team members and retirees have joined together to spruce up the Cancer Survivors Park for Spring. Across the country TELUS employees have logged thousands of hours collecting waste from river valleys, parks and fields; sorting food at food banks; assembling school supply kits; donating blood to the Canadian Blood Services and countless other initiatives.
“The TELUS Day of Service demonstrates our commitment to the communities in which we live and work,” said Shannon Gorman, National Director of Community Investment and Engagement for TELUS. “In 2009 more than 9,600 TELUS team members, retirees and friends participated in the day, volunteering more than 28,000 hours.”
The Richard and Annette Bloch Cancer Survivors Park is located at the corner of Industrial, Riverside and Alta Vista, and is the second of its kind in Canada. The Park offers a place of serenity and inspiration to cancer patients, survivors and their families and friends. In June 2010, the Cancer Foundation will break ground on the construction of Wellspring Ottawa – the region’s first centre for cancer survivorship. The facility will be built adjacent to the Cancer Survivors Park.
