John Hoyles is originally from Val d'Or, Québec. After graduating from the University of Ottawa with an English degree, he attended Osgoode Hall Law School. John Hoyles was a founding partner of Byck, Hoyles & Grant, Barristers and Solicitors of New Liskeard, Ontario from 1980 to 1990. He is a member of the Canadian and American Bar Associations as well as the Association des juristes d'expressions française de l'Ontario.
From 1981 to 1988, John Hoyles was a member of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board. From 1981 he served as Acting Crown Attorney for the Province of Ontario, conducting trials both in English and French. In the community, John Hoyles was Chairman of the Board of the Temiskaming Hospital. From 1987 to 1990 Mr. Hoyles was Chairman of the Red Shield Appeal (Salvation Army) for South Temiskaming.
In June 1990, John Hoyles assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of the GST Consumer Information Office and was responsible for advising and assisting consumers with the transition to the GST.
On October 17, 1991 Mr. Hoyles was appointed Executive Vice-President and General Manager of the National Capital Commission and was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Commission, including liaison with federal government departments of the Treasury Board and Privy Council Office.
On September 19, 1996 Mr. Hoyles assumed the position of Executive Director for the Canadian Bar Association. As Executive Director, he is the Chief Operating Officer of the Canadian Bar Association.
John has been active in the community, working with the University of Ottawa on fundraising and serving as President of Camelot Golf & Country Club. He is currently the Chair of Association Section of the United Way campaign for Ottawa and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Ottawa Cancer Centre Foundation.
John has served on the Board of the Canadian Society of Association Executives for six years and was Chair of the Board of CSAE from July 2002 to October 2003. In May 2004 he was named the Executive Member of the Year by the CSAE National Capital Region Chapter.
Mr. Hoyles is a Charter Member of the International Institute of Law Association Chief Executives and is currently Secretary-Treasurer of that organization.
