COVID-19

our current situation:

Cancer Coaching continues to be offered only by phone or secure video chat, to ensure the health and safety of all clients and Cancer Coaches. You can register for Cancer Coaching at this link.

The Maplesoft-GumDocs Centre for Cancer Survivorship remains closed to the public.

All in-person fundraising events are currently on hold. Information on virtual events and other fundraising opportunities can be found on this page.

Update: august 17, 2020

Cancer Coaching:

While some in-person healthcare and social services in the community are beginning to resume as part of Ontario’s Stage 3 reopening framework, please note that the Cancer Foundation will be continuing to offer Cancer Coaching only via telephone or secure video chat.

Given that the risk of exposure to COVID-19 still exists within Ottawa, healthcare authorities are recommending that if organizations have the ability to provide high-quality virtual care, they should continue to do so wherever possible. To learn more about how Cancer Coaching might be able to help you and your family, please visit https://www.ottawacancer.ca/how-can-we-help-you/cancer-coaching/cancercoaching/. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your Cancer Coach or send an email to coaching@ottawacancer.ca.

Reiki:

Given that certain types of Reiki can be administered at a distance, we are pleased to share that we will be able to resume offering  Reiki services to our Cancer Coaching clients this fall. The Maplesoft-GumDocs Centre for Cancer Survivorship will remain closed to the public, and clients and practitioners will remain in the safety of their own homes: client and practitioner still communicate about their intentions for the service and arrange a date and time for the Reiki to be administered, they are simply not in the same room when it happens.

Distance Reiki will be available to Cancer Coaching clients later this fall free of charge, though donations to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation are always welcomed. More details about contacting a Reiki volunteer or setting up a distanced session will be emailed out to our clients in early September, and any questions can be sent to coaching@ottawacancer.ca.

Events:

The virtual Cardel Homes Lemonade Standemonium will officially wrap up on Saturday, August 22. Thank you to all our participants and donors for your hard work, and to all of our sponsors: Cardel Homes, Hydro Ottawa, Giant Tiger, The Green Beaver Company, Lighthouse Lemonade, CTV News, Pure Country 94, Majic 100.3, and 580 CFRA. To help families across Ottawa support families who are facing cancer, make your donation to the Cardel Homes Lemonade Standemonium at www.itakeastand.ca.

The virtual Cancer Champions Breakfast will take place on Wednesday, September 16th at 7:30am. Since 2009, the Cancer Champions Breakfast has brought together local community leaders and has raised over $4 million for local cancer care, and will now be continuing this incredible legacy online. Sign up to join the virtual event as a guest or Table Captain at www.cancerchampions.ca.

Update: july 8, 2020

Beginning the week of July 6, the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation’s remote operations will be returning to a full-time schedule of 5 days per week, Monday through Friday. Cancer Coaching continues to be available virtually by appointment. If you would like to meet with a Cancer Coach, please call 613-247-1920 ext. 327, sign up online at www.ottawacancer.ca/coachme, or email coaching@ottawacancer.ca.

Please note the Maplesoft-GumDocs Centre for Cancer Survivorship remains closed to the public.

UPDATE: June 9, 2020

The Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation continues to operate virtually, 4 days per week, Monday through Thursday, and the Maplesoft-GumDocs Centre for Cancer Survivorship remains closed to the public.

Cancer Coaching is available Monday through Friday by appointment. If you would like to meet with a Cancer Coach, please call 613-247-1920 ext. 327 or email coaching@ottawacancer.ca.

Cancer Coaching is entirely funded by the community, and with the cancellation of many of our fundraising events, there is an urgent need for donations to make sure that everyone who needs the help of a Cancer Coach can get it. With some of our clients facing delayed surgeries and treatments, and many coping with the uncertainty and stress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this is also a time of increased need. To make a donation in support of Cancer Coaching, please visit www.ottawacancer.ca/donate

Events:

  • The Cardel Lemonade Standemonium will be hosted in a virtual format this year, with the campaign running until August. For more information, please visit ottawacancer.ca/lemonade
  • The Cancer Champions Breakfast will be hosted in a virtual format on September 16, 2020. For more information, please visit cancerchampions.ca or call Paula Muldoon at 613-247-1920 ext. 258.
  • The monthly Shred-It for a Cure event in support of the Cancer Foundation has been put on hold indefinitely. There are currently no future Shred-It events scheduled, but we will provide an update as soon as we know more about the future of the event.

Update: April 22, 2020

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation has reduced its operating hours to 4 days per week, Monday through Thursday. Effective April 24, 2020, our offices will be closed on Fridays until further notice.

This decision was made to best allocate our resources during these uncertain times. We will take every possible measure to limit the impact to our regular operations so that we can continue to support and provide the best cancer care in Eastern Ontario.

Cancer Coaching remains available Monday through Friday by appointment. If you would like to meet with a Cancer Coach, please call 613-247-1920 ext. 327 or email coaching@ottawacancer.ca

We thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to navigate this ever-changing situation.

Update: April 9, 2020

Mail Delay: Tax Receipts and Tribute Letters

As we continue to carefully follow the guidelines set by the province of Ontario and local public health authorities, our staff are limited in their ability to complete traditional in-office tasks such as accepting mail and processing donations made by cheque. As a result, it may take longer for certain gifts to be processed, for tax receipts to be mailed, and for Tribute Letters to be sent:

  • Donors who have mailed in their donation or requested their tax receipt by mail can expect to receive it within two weeks of the date they mailed in their gift.
  • Donors who have made a gift in memory of someone and who have requested that we mail a Tribute Letter to the family can also expect the letter to be mailed out within two weeks of the date they mailed in their gift.
  • For online donations, donors can expect to receive their tax receipt right away via email. Those making a donation online in memory of someone and requesting that a Tribute Letter be mailed to the family can expect it to be mailed the Monday following the date they made their online gift.

If you are concerned about the delay in processing and mail times, we encourage you to make your gift online at www.ottawacancer.ca/donate rather than through the mail. However, rest assured that all mail is still being accepted in a timely and secure manner.

No matter how you choose to give, we appreciate your patience and understanding as we adapt our processes to keep our staff safe.

Cardel Lemonade Standemonium

This year’s Cardel Lemonade Standemonium will not be taking place on Saturday, June 6th and has been postponed to a later date to be determined. Until we determine a new date for the event that is safe for participants and donors, we are glad to announce we have launched the virtual Cardel Lemonade Standemonium campaign, featuring lots of fun new ways for kids to help families who are facing cancer in our community. Rather than hosting a physical lemonade stand in the community to kick off the summer, children across the Ottawa Region will be encouraged to raise funds online while taking part in our virtual Lemonade activities. Please visit www.ottawacancer.ca/lemonade to learn more or register your virtual lemonade stand.

STATEMENT ON THE NOVEL CORONAVIRUS: MARCH 13, 2020

In order to do all we can to protect the community’s health while continuing to support and provide the best cancer care in Eastern Ontario, the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation will be adjusting certain programs, policies, procedures, and events to reflect the seriousness of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Ultimately, the goal is to encourage social distancing as recommended by public health authorities, and to protect the health of our stakeholders and the more vulnerable members of our community.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely as it evolves and update our programs and services as required.

These are proactive, preventative measures that we are taking to mitigate the risk for all of our staff, our families, our clients and our other stakeholders.

To our clients:

  • Effective Monday, March 16th 2020, all one-on-one Coaching appointments will be held either by phone or online through the secure NexJ Platform. Cancer Coaches and Coaching staff will reach out via phone or email as soon as possible to let clients know about these changes. If you have questions about your Coaching appointment, please reach out to us at 613-247-3527.
  • Group Cancer Coaching programs like Yoga Thrive and CLIMB will be postponed until further notice.
  • Appointments for additional care services such as Reiki and the Infrared Sauna will be cancelled until further notice.
  • Independent support groups who meet at the Maplesoft-GumDocs Centre for Cancer Survivorship will be asked to host their meetings through virtual spaces like Skype or Google Hangouts.

To our event participants:

STATEMENT ON THE NOVEL CORONAVIRUS: MARCH 11, 2020

As Ottawa today confirms its first case of COVID-19, we will continue to monitor the situation closely in order to help keep our community as safe and healthy as possible. Currently, the risk to the public is still low, but to reduce the chance of spreading germs that can cause the novel coronavirus, we ask that you refer to the Ottawa Public Health guidelines at www.ottawapublichealth.ca/coronavirus and continue reading our recommendations below for the Maplesoft-GumDocs Centre for Cancer Survivorship.

To our clients: If you are not showing any signs of illness (e.g. fever, runny nose, cough, shortness of breath), please use your own discretion in regards to attending your Coaching appointments in person versus attending by phone or online. All clients have access to our secure NexJ platform where they can video chat with their Cancer Coach without having to reschedule their appointment, and are welcome to complete their appointment over the phone if that is preferred. If you are not feeling well, stay home and contact your doctor to determine your next steps. If you have any questions or concerns about your Coaching appointments, just give us a call at 613-247-3527.

To other visitors: Some of the people you meet at the Maplesoft-GumDocs Centre for Cancer Survivorship may have a pre-existing health condition or compromised immunity due to cancer treatment. This means if they are exposed to the coronavirus, they may be more likely to experience severe illness or complications. We encourage anyone who is planning to come to the centre for a meeting to have their meeting by phone or via email instead, and to follow recommended community guidelines for keeping themselves and the people around them healthy. This is especially important for anyone who has recently traveled outside of Canada, to any country.

To all: Follow public health guidelines for good hygiene at all times, starting with the steps here: https://www.ottawapublichealth.ca/en/public-health-services/stop-the-spread-of-germs.aspx. If you are experiencing symptoms of a respiratory illness, public health officials urge you to avoid close contact with others and stay home. If you are experiencing symptoms of coronavirus, including cough, fever, runny nose, and/or shortness of breath and your symptoms are not immediately severe, call Ottawa Public Health at 613-580-6744 or your own physician before presenting to any emergency department or doctor’s office in person. Take special care to avoid hospitals, long-term care homes, and other areas where you may put more vulnerable people at risk.

If you are feeling nervous about all of this information, rest assured our public health teams are doing everything they can to keep the community healthy and to keep lines of communication open. Follow public health guidelines for keeping yourself healthy, follow @OttawaHealth on Facebook and Twitter or visit www.ottawapublichealth.ca/ for the most up-to-date information, and stay home if you are not feeling well. If you are experiencing emotional distress, it never hurts to get in touch with the Ottawa Distress Centre at 613-238-3311.

For anyone planning to attend one of our upcoming events or group Coaching programs, we will be in touch with you directly in advance of the event should anything change.
